Whew, we are almost there! Lets finish up this next week strongly and move into finals.
Now is the time to be prepping for finals. This is also a stressful time in the semester. If you are stressing out, here are some places to go:
· Your advisor and/or favorite professor - pick someone that you can talk with!
· ENGR 200 - this is my office. Make an appointment and get talking to someone
· CAPS [ web ] this is the University counseling services. They really help students a great deal.
· Dean of Students - another great "ear" for listening. They know the rules and the system and can develop alternatives.
If you get into a jam and are really having difficulty during finals due to extenuating circumstances (health, accident, family issues) there are things that can be done. Please contact my office. Do not just skip a final and take a 0. There is no need to do that.
Petition for Late Registration
The last day to submit a Petition for Late Registration is May 6th at 5:00pm, No Exceptions. Make sure you have all of the signatures on the petition and change of schedule forms and your explanation attached. Submit all forms to the Academic Dean's Office, Engr. Bldg. Rm. 200. Please check your schedules and make sure for the last time that you are only registered for all classes that you are attending. After May 6, we have no power to change schedules and you will be using University General Petitions.
Design Day
If you missed Design Day on May 1, then you missed a huge day. We think that we will be on the Channel 4 News (NBC) on Tuesday on the 4:00 show.
Here is the Project Summary from the Overall Best Design Award:
The Mouse-Optics Based Position Measurement and Display System (MOS) performs two major functions. First, technology adapted from standard optical mice allows the position of a microscope stage to be tracked. Second, distance measurements can be made within the field of view of the microscope using images from the microscope’s camera. The two functionalities of the system are integrated by a graphical user interface which also allows the user to save images with stage positions and calibrate the system.
Major congrats to David Piorkowski, Abraham Fijal, Kohong Chen, Bryon Cocilovo and Joshua Wiersma. The complete list of award winners is below at the end of the note. Note that Teamwork, Presentation, Documentation, Analysis, Software, and Creativity are all critical in the design process, so we have an award for each!. We had over 55 projects! Congrats to our seniors! For more project information, you can go do http://scpm.ltc.arizona.edu and click on the project link.
Thinking about summer school? - Peter Gill has written an editorial about summer school classes. There is no magic in learning material. Hard material takes time and effort. Summer school may sound great but doing a solid job in a course like Physics or Calc will almost surely not allow you to work at an internship or even a 1/2 time job. Read what Peter has to say and check out the Math tutoring hours below!
Awards
· For all graduating seniors, please send employment plans to Amina Sonnie [ email ]. We try and track these things so we need your information! Also, remember to forward your UANETID email to a private account like gmail. You can now do this for life!
· Dr. Paul Blowers (CHEE) - has won the NACADA award as Outstanding Faculty Advisor! NACADA is the national advising association so this puts Dr. Blowers as one of the top faculty advisors in the country. he will be presented with a recognition plaque for this award at thespecial Awards Ceremony and Reception being held at the annual NACADA conference in Chicago in October. Congratulate him when you see him. He is the faculty member in CHEE with the white tee shirt, shorts, and cool glasses.
· The Ultima Spoon Team - Jessica Hastings, Paul Sanders, Javier Flores, Eric Hammons - won the award for best ENGR 102 design. The product was a spoon that dispenses liquid when you want. Tons of cool ideas on how to use it. Think patent for this neat idea!
· Manny Robles (SHPE President, Engineering Ambassador, and AME student) - won the Excellence in Leadership Award by JUNTOS, which is an umbrella organization for all Hispanic clubs on campus. Manny is a great student and does a ton of service for the College and for SHPE. Congrats on being recognized for all this work!
· Jenny Mills and Cecilia Gaxiola (ENGR 200 staff) - won an Honorary SHPE Member Award for their continuous work and support of SHPE. Both have been invaluable members of the ENGR 200 staff for many years and are generally the point people for helping students. I want to thank SHPE for honoring our staff as these people work tirelessly to help students and it is really nice to get thanked in this manner.
Ok, lets hold it together this weekend and get ready for finals.
