Frequently Asked Questions of a Wildcat Parent How many students are in the College of Engineering? The College of Engineering currently has about 3000 students- approximately 2400 undergraduates and 600 graduate students. The freshman class admitted for Fall of 2011 is approximately 560 students. Is admission into the College of Engineering competitive?Yes. The admissions process for the College of Engineering is based on a comprehensive review of each student’s academic credentials. We look at students’ grades, SAT or ACT scores, Honors/AP courses taken, Math curriculum, and personal statement. In recent years we have admitted around 65% of students who apply to the College of Engineering. For more information on Admission to the College of Engineering, check out our Undergraduate Admissions pages. Are engineering students required to graduate in four years? No. Each of the 13 Engineering Majors at the University of Arizona is designed to be completed within four years as long as you are calculus-ready. However, students start at different math proficiencies, add additional minors and majors, and pursue internship, co-op and study abroad opportunities. For some, this might add an additional semester or two. Can an engineering student pursue a minor? The College of Engineering offers minors in all of the 13 degree programs. Our students are also encouraged to pursue minors outside of the College of Engineering; for example, we have students with minors in music performance, dance, language, mathematics, business, and pre-health (prep for medical/dental/physical therapy school). How much time studying is expected?A student can expect to study at least three hours per week for every class unit they take. An average 3-unit class will usually require nine hour a week of work outside of the classroom. Will there be time for extra-curricular activities?Yes! There are over 35 clubs and organizations within the College of Engineering. These extra-curricular groups are a great way for students to gain extra hands-on engineering experience, develop professional skills and contacts, acquire tools to support their academic success, and engage them in philanthropic and community service activities. Check out the opportunities in the College of Engineering on the Clubs and Organizations page. How difficult is it to switch majors within the College of engineering?During Freshman and Sophomore year, switching majors within the College of Engineering is straight forward as long as a student is in good academic standing. Once a student has begun their major specific coursework, it becomes more difficult to switch majors and stay on a four-year plan for graduation. Why was my student admitted as “No Major Selected” in the College of Engineering? When will he/she be able to choose their major? All first-time freshmen are admitted to the College of Engineering as No Major Selected. This gives students the opportunity to freely explore all 13 engineering majors, and the space and time to make an informed decision about where their interests and abilities lie. Our First Year curriculum has been designed to be common across all Engineering majors. After students have completed ENGR 102: An Introduction to Engineering and Calculus I with a ‘C’ or better, they are encouraged to select a major. Often students are eligible to choose a major by the end of their freshman year. Which residence halls (dorms) should my student apply for? While all of the residence halls on campus offer great services and are an essential part of the freshman experience, the College of Engineering is excited to offer your student the chance to live in our living-learning community, the Engineering Zone. This community is located on the third floor of Gila Hall, situated near the various engineering buildings. Please check the eZONE page for more information on what this hall has to offer and how to become a part of the eZONE community. Is it difficult for my student to get into courses they want/need?During Freshman year, our advising team ensures that students get all of the courses that are required within the first year curriculum. Students in the Sophomore year and above will get increasing priority on class selection. They are responsible for registering for classes on their own, but can receive guidance on course selection from their academic advisors. When can engineering students apply for internships or research positions? Our students are encouraged to apply for research and internships starting in their freshman year. Since the University of Arizona is a Research 1 institution, there are opportunities in every discipline for research. Internships are also available to the students willing to attend our on-campus career fairs and put their name out into industry at the earliest chance they can. The College of Engineering strives to make information about research and internship opportunities readily available to students. It is up to the student to pursue these openings and start their professional experiences. What is the parking situation on campus/residence halls?Parking is available to those who apply for parking permits through Parking and Transportation. While Freshman are not prevented from having a car, it is strongly recommended that they do not bring a vehicle if they are living on campus. The University of Arizona is a residential campus and, as such, has most major amenities on-campus or within walking distance. What kind of advising services are available to engineering students?During Freshman year, students are provided with advising through the College of Engineering academic affairs office. The Freshman advisor will help students choose the right classes and eventually help them choose a major within Engineering. Once students have picked a major, they are encouraged to use departmental advisors for their academic needs What kind of family events are there?Every fall, the College of Engineering participates in family weekend by hosting a dinner for honors and freshman students and families to meet the faculty and staff of the College of Engineering. Homecoming is another great time to visit students and get into the wildcat spirit! When it comes time for your student to graduate, The College of Engineering hosts departmental Pre-Commencements to provide an intimate family experience for our graduating seniors. How can I stay involved in my student's education? The College of Engineering would like to keep you updated on events and opportunities available to your student by inviting you to join our Parent Listserv. The Assisstant Dean of the College of Engineering will regularly send out emails to those who sign up with updates on what is going on within the college. This is a great way to engage your student and keep in touch with UA Engineering.
