Marcellin's Work Dazzles
Next time you’re at the movies and dazzled by the brilliant color, razor-sharp images, lack of flicker, and lifelike sound, thank Professor Michael Marcellin.
Marcellin is an internationally recognized expert on image compression and has played a key role in the movie industry’s move to a standardized digital format.
As movie theaters and movie studios convert from film to digital, theater audiences will be treated to the high-end image quality that was previously seen only on “answer prints,” which come directly from the negatives — the kind of quality that was reserved for directors, producers and others involved in making films.
During the next decade, Marcellin’s work on image processing also will contribute to better video cameras, cell phones. archival storage systems and medical imaging.
Marcellin, the International Foundation for Telemetering Professor in UA Electrical and Computer Engineering, also is recognized as an outstanding teacher. Student reviews include comments such as, "It is the best course I have ever taken from the best professor I have seen," "incredibly good lecturer," "best instructor in the universe" and "the best teacher one can have in his life."
