The giant rocks outside Old Main on the UA campus, some weighing almost 20 tons, are donated by engineering alums at a local mining company. Mining engineering students then use them for drilling competitions.

Thomas R. Brown Distinguished Scholarship

What is the Brown Scholarship?

The Thomas R. Brown Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman who are National Scholars and display excellence in academic and extracurricular endeavors.

This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of the Thomas R. Brown Foundation. Tom Brown, co-founder of Burr-Brown, led Burr-Brown to worldwide prominence in the development, manufacturing andmarketing of data conversion and mixed signal integrated circuits. Texas Instruments acquired Burr-Brown in 2000 for an amount that still holds the record for an Arizona-grown entrepreneurial endeavor.

Who is Eligible for the Brown Scholarship?

The College of Engineering awards the Thomas R. Brown Distinguished Scholarship to a select group of our National Scholars. The following groups are eligible to apply for the Brown Scholarship:

National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists & Finalists
National Hispanic Scholars
National Achievement Semifinalists & Finalists

What is the Scholarship Package?

Students who are selected to receive the Brown Scholarship will be awarded $5,000 per year. This scholarship supersedes the College of Engineering National Scholars $1,000 awards and will not be added in addition. The scholarship can be renewed for three additional years under the conditions stated below.

What are the Terms and Conditions for Recieving These Scholarships?

In order to receive the Brown Scholarship if you are a qualifying student, you must complete the following:

Complete the Thomas R. Brown Distinguished Scholarship Application, as well as submit an essay and resume by March 1, 2013.
Apply and be admitted to The University of Arizona and College of Engineering by April 15, 2013
Start as a freshman in the College of Engineering; no scholarships will be awarded for those who transfer in at a later date.
Designate Engineering as the primary college if you have more than one major.

In order to retain the Brown Scholarship for following years, the following requirements must be met:

Remain in the College of Engineering and demonstrate academic progress in one of our 13 Engineering Majors.
Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
If GPA falls below 3.5, the scholarship will be renewed at $1,000 as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher
This is checked at the end of each semester. If GPA drops below 3.0, students have one semester to regain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. (Does not include summer session)
